Happy Birthday Chrysalis Creative Home Staging!
Today is our birthday. Chrysalis was started November 1, 2015, just 2 months after I lost my career in the oil patch so it was born of necessity, not by any strategic planning on my part. In fact, I was very comfortable in the life I had.
I had worked for a large oil company for nearly 30 years, working with the same people, and in the same department so long I could walk the corridor with my eyes shut. I knew who I was, and what my place was in the company. It was a very comfortable existence.
Being let go with 150 of my friends was a huge blow. I was in the later years of my career, making a great living, and satisfied with my lot in life. I lost my job, and indeed my identity in the middle of a profound local downturn. The likelihood of getting another job in the industry at 54 years old was slim, but I wasn’t ready to retire. So… I decided to switch gears.
The last 4 years have been exciting, terrifying and fun all at the same time. I have been on a steep learning curve. Not only did I completely switch industries, but I am the one in charge of everything it takes to run a business. I manage everything from business development and marketing to doing the actual work and then ensuring we get paid. Someone once told me “the best experiences in life lie just outside your comfort zone”, and boy were they right!
This business started with a big dream, a wonderful husband and very little else. I chose the name Chrysalis (pronounced KRIS-ah-Liss) because that is the place where a caterpillar becomes a butterfly. I felt it was a great symbol for the personal transformation I was going through as well as the transformation in the properties along the way.
In just 4 short years, the company has changed from a one woman show to a team of 4. We have two company vehicles and a warehouse full of furniture. We work with some of the best realtors in the city, and have formed alliances with photographers and trades people to ensure our properties stand out among the competition.
Good things really do come to those who wait… I may be a late bloomer, but in just 4 years I have been named one of Canada’s top 10 vacant stagers, luxury vacant stager and occupied stagers by RESA (Real Estate Staging Association) and won a top 10 placement in Occupied Staging by IAHSP (International Association of Home Staging Professionals).
This year, I was named one of the staging industry’s 75 Most Influential People alongside some of my staging heroes. To stand in that company is absolutely amazing to me. To be one of the influencers among the thousands of stagers in North America. Life really does hold some amazing things when you step outside your comfort zone.
